The biggest strike in Ryanair’s history is planned for the last week of September. It was announced on Friday by the different European unions, who all met in Rome. The date will be fixed and communicated next Thursday, at the next meeting between the organisations in Brussels. There could also be sporadic country by country strikes between now and the end of the month.
Several European unions that represent Ryanair crew members met in Rome to discuss the impact of this summer’s strike action and the next steps. They have again appealed to political authorities, in particular to Belgian authorities, to intervene on this issue and make sure laws are applied.
The organisations, which includes the CNE in Belgium, have asked to meet with the European Commission on Thursday. “We are considering taking more sporadic country by country action, such as strikes, between now and the end of the month,” says Didier Lebbe, the permanent secretary of the Christian union.
The different European unions met in Lisbon and then Madrid back in the spring. They eventually decided on a two-day cabin crew strike in Belgium, Italy, Spain and Portugal. Ryanair pilots went on strike in Belgium, Sweden, Ireland, Germany and the Netherlands two weeks later, affecting around 55,000 passengers.
Pilot unions and organisations in these countries are asking for the relevant national labour rights and not just the Irish legislation to be applied.
