Two-thirds of those under 34 acknowledge the need to prolong their careers. The survey proving this was conducted by the Federation of Belgian Enterprises (FEB).
Pieter Timmermans, the organisation’s CEO stresses, “The reason for demonstrating is not over the pension of youngsters, but actually that of the generation preparing to leave the employment market. Today’s youngster’s have nothing to gain from demonstrations.”
The CSC (Confederation of Christian Trade Unions), the FGTB (General Federation of Belgian Labour) and the CGSLB (General Confederation of Liberal Trade Unions) is on Tuesday organising a day of action for pension reform, which specifically anticipates the increase of the legal pension age to 67, and takes account of strenuous occupations in terms of access to pensions.
The CEO of the FEB, Pieter Timmermans, says, “Living longer, studying longer and the desire to increase pension amounts is only conceivable for people by extending their careers.
According to the FEB’s survey conducted amongst 1,000 workers and 462 employers, it emerges that 81% of employers believe that it is necessary to work longer, owing to the ageing population, and the additional costs that this leads to in social security terms. Workers are more divided, with 54% in favour of such a plan. Two-thirds of youngsters (those under 34) are in favour of a career extension.
