Wallonia proposes to pay 36% of Belgium’s water treatment fine

Wallonia has come up with a proposal for the distribution among the regions of a 10-million-euro fine imposed on Belgium five years ago for non-compliance with European rules on the treatment of urban waste water. The Federal Government had paid the fine up front in order to give the country’s three regions time to agree on their respective contributions. Based on its calculations, Wallonia now estimates that its share of the fine is 36% and will pay 3.6 million euros, L’Avenir reported on Wednesday.

Flanders would pay 40.3% and Brussels 23.4%, according to the Walloon proposal.

The regions had been trying since 2013 to agree on the amount each should pay back to the Federal Government.
