German “abattoir of horrors” supplied Belgian market
SOKO Tierschutz published images of ill or injured cows and calves being mistreated.

On Thursday, the animal welfare organization, Animal Rights, asserted that a German abattoir, forced to close last week due to animal abuse, was also selling its meat on the Belgian market. The Belgian company affected confirmed the information, stating that it had immediately ended its collaboration with the provider concerned.

The abattoir Karl Temme in Bad Iburg, a town in north-west Germany, is involved in an animal abuse scandal, disclosed by the German animal rights organization SOKO Tierschutz. Last week the latter organization published images of the abattoir showing cows and calves, either ill or injured, negligently dragged using a winch. For this reason the company has had to close.

Animals Rights said, "Dead animals were also delivered. They were either dying in transit or had been urgently slaughtered on their farms of origin.”

The abattoir Karl Temme was a supplier of the company, Dierickx in Zele, of East Flanders. The latter company exports its meat to the majority of European Union countries. Statements made by Animal Rights indicate that it also got in touch with the Federal Agency for Food Chain Safety (AFSCA).

Contacted by Belga, the company Dierickx confirmed that it was previously working with the abattoir but ended their collaboration after the images were discovered. Moreover, it “roundly [condemns all] such practices.”
