On Thursday, the organizations Climate Express and Climate Coalition initiated the largest climate march “Claim the Climate”. They were calling upon citizens to gather in Brussels on December 2nd, 2018, the day of the official opening of the 24th Climate Conference in Katowice in Poland. Together, they would like to organize “the largest climate demonstration on record in Belgium” with thousands taking part in the streets demanding climate justice.

The “Claim the Climate” galvanization forms the culmination of a series of actions organised throughout the world, prior to COP24 in Poland. In Belgium, since September, the citizens have in particular every first Saturday of the month come together with the “Rise for Climate Belgium” movement, with a view to requiring greater political action on climate.

The President of the Climate Coalition, Nicolas Van Nuffel, in a communiqué published on Thursday, explained, “On the first day of the International Climate Conference, the Climate Coalition and Climate Express will highlight to our Belgian leaders the need for a more ambitious climate policy at global, European and national level. They will demand that global warming is limited to a maximum of 1.5°C, as determined in the Paris agreement.

The organisers say that too many commitments made in Paris three years ago are still to be implemented. “Since 2014, CO2 emissions are again increasing in Belgium, owing to a lack of political courage and cooperation. We must therefore move at a faster pace. More and more people are making this message heard aloud.”

The national environmental action day on Sunday December 2nd will begin at noon in the Gare du Nord in Brussels, ending with a climate show planned to take place at 5 p.m. in the Parc du Cinquantenaire. Moreover several related events will be organized in various Belgian towns and cities.

To date, nearly 3,000 participants have already signed up for the demonstration in December, according to the website “Claim the Climate”.
