Limited volume of letters, packages distributed by Bpost

The Belgian postal company, Bpost, has disclosed that it distributed only a limited volume of letters and packages on Wednesday, due to a strike at its sorting centres. However, all newspapers were delivered.

Up to 10 p.m. on Tuesday, all the letters and packages reached the distribution centres where the postmen and postwomen usually pick them up for delivery to their destinations. On Wednesday, the letters and packages were distributed, but in more restricted volumes.

At the local level, postmen and women in some locations did not go out on delivery. In Gerpinnes, for example, newspapers were not distributed, and the classic deliveries were not done. In Hoeilaart, subscribers received their newspapers, but the distribution was more chaotic. In Brussels city centre, only the classic distribution was done.

The strike is due to last five days, with the various postal departments staying off the job in turns.

The Bpost management has stated that it wishes to meet quickly with the unions to find solutions to the conflict.

However, workers’ representatives accused management of not taking them seriously. Marc De Mulder, president of SLFP-Poste, one of the unions representing postal workers, said that talks thus far have been a monologue and called for “real negotiations”.
