The national appeal by the consortium 12-12 for donations for victims of the earthquake and the tsunami, which ravaged Indonesia at the end of September, have borne fruit. The consortium indicated, on Friday, that it has to date collected €3,160,000.
Current assessments, reported by the consortium, which may yet evolve, over a month after the catastrophe report more than 2,000 deaths, more than 1,000 people reported missing and more than 200,000 displaced persons. The consortium also reports that there are more than 68,000 houses and in excess of 1,500 schools damaged.
The 12-12 consortium brings together seven humanitarian organisations based in Belgium: Caritas International.be, the Red Cross, Handicap International, Médecins du Monde, Oxfam-Solidarity, Plan International Belgium and Unicef Belgium. Donations, which were given to the consortium as part of its appeal “Indonesia 12-12”, have been redistributed to benefit action on the ground by these organisations.
Together, these are active throughout the region affected by the earthquake-tsunami on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi. Some are focusing their action on supplying water and equipment, such as Oxfam Solidarity, others Unicef being one encompass a wider range of spheres.
