L'Echo and De Tijd are reporting, on Wednesday, that the federal Minister for the Self-employed Denis Ducarme wishes to implement paternity leave provision. His aim is to do so before the end of the current parliament. Ducarme has told both daily newspapers, and they are stating that the measure is likely to cost around €10 million.

Denis Ducarme, who is setting out his 2019 general policy brief to parliament this Wednesday, is thereby playing his trump cards before the 2019 elections.

The paternity leave provision for the self-employed is likely be modelled on that for employees (10 days), with greater flexibility. However, other less ambitious avenues are envisaged.

The minister is also announcing the forthcoming launch of the reform of social security exemptions and adoption leave. In addition by the end of the parliament he wishes to see a relaxing of the conditions for access to financial support for the self-employed.
