Patients now able to consult their prescriptions online
Maggie De Block, the Minister for Health, sees online prescriptions as the future, with paper-based prescriptions gradually being phased out.

Patients can now consult medical or dental prescriptions on Masanté, the online portal enabling access to an entire range of health data. The revelation was made by Maggie De Block, the Minister for Health (of the Flemish Conservative-Liberals), on Friday.

Individuals registered on the portal (www.masante.belgique.be) will have free access to all prescriptions made out by their doctors and dentists, provided such specialists produce them electronically. In October, 13,648 doctors and 3,733 dentists were already found to be issuing prescriptions in this way.

The possibility offered to patients to consult such data is a further step towards entirely electronic prescriptions. For now, a doctor prescribing drugs online no longer issues paper prescriptions, but an electronic prescription only. Ultimately, paper prescriptions will also disappear.

The aim will be that patients can indicate via Masanté which pharmacy they wish to collect a given medication from. The chosen pharmacist will automatically receive the electronic prescription, and will be able to prepare the prescribed drug requested.
