Protesters outside Parliament call for more ambitious climate policy

Hundreds of demonstrators assembled outside the Federal Parliament on Tuesday to call for a more ambitious climate policy. The protesters, massed at the corner of Rue de Louvain and Rue Royale, urged the politicians to “stop playing poker” and work on measures to combat global warming.

“Climate does not tolerate current affairs,” one of the demonstrators said in an address.

The demonstrators regretted that Belgium was not a member of the ambitious countries formed at the COP24 in Katowice, Poland, and who wish to substantially raise climate targets over the next few years.

Many associations, including Greenpeace, had called on people to participate in the protest.

Earlier on Tuesday, the Chamber’s Commission on Health and Environment approved a draft resolution calling on Belgium to raise its climate targets.
