The fact that the government is resigning does not call into question the signature of the UN Pact on Migration by Belgium in New York. The UN Ambassador, Jean-Luc Bodson, gave the confirmation on Wednesday in several Flemish media outlets. Information to this effect also appears in the Sudpresse publications.
“The government’s resignation changes nothing," he confirmed. The order to vote “Yes” had already been given in September by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Didier Reynders (of the Liberal-Conservative Liberal Reformist Movement). The nationalist New Flemish Alliance did not object to the signature of the Pact at the time. However, Belgium will now provide its support using an interpretative declaration, which is moreover as the Netherlands and Denmark are anticipating.
The precise text is not known but Belgium stresses in a note the non-binding nature of the pact, as well as its wish to continue to distinguish so-called regular and irregular migration.
