Each month, the police discover around 700 cases of identity fraud. The criminals, from fraudsters to terrorists, resort to false identities or steal the identity of a third-party individual to commit their given crimes. The daily publication, De Tijd, reports on Friday that last year the police found 8,461 cases.
The Principal Crown Prosecutors will before long send out a circular upon sharing information between the interested courts, police and government services, to ensure improvement of this exchange.
A further (controversial) measure of the Michel government, in the fight against identity fraud, is the linking of fingerprints to all identity cards from April 2019.
