Belgium commences sanction proceedings against Betway betting site
Betway risks suspension (either permanent or temporary) of its licence.

The Gaming Commission has decided to start sanction proceedings against Betway, report De Tijd, Le Soir and Knack on Wednesday. The online betting site, which in particular sponsors RSC Anderlecht and the Pro League (now Belgian First Division A), had come under severe criticism during the Paradise Papers investigation for the opaque nature of its structure and financial flows, as well its close links to the illegal sites.

The sector regulator is accusing the betting site of “a lack of transparency”, as well as its accumulation of licences, which is illegal.

“The conclusions of the Gaming Commission will be sent to the ISI (the “Special Tax Inspectorate”, editor’s note), to the Public Prosecutor and the CTIF (the unit responsible for the handling of financial information, editor’s note), indicated a Commission spokeswoman to these media outlets.

Betway risks suspension (either permanent or temporary) of its licence. Such action would stop it from being active on the Belgian gaming market. A fine is also possible.

The sanction proceedings which have just been started anticipate, above all, that Betway will be able to respond to the accusations made by the Gaming Commission. The sanction will only be decided when the current dialogue phase has concluded, stresses Le Soir.
