Government wants all Belgian homes to have internet

The government wants the 23,000 Belgian homes that don’t currently have a broadband internet connection to get one within the next two years. They could get either a landline or mobile connection, says Telecommunications minister Philippe De Backer.

A royal decree has been issued to reduce the costs operators have to pay when setting up a new connection by 80%. This is designed to encourage them to invest in the 23 zones that currently have poor or no connection.

“These days, we use our smartphones day and night. Smartphones, applications and digital applications make our life easier. But to take full advantage of this we need a strong internet connection at all times. Having no internet blind spots would stimulate our digital economy and internet trade,” the minister explained.
