Van Rompuy denies any Brexit mediation role

Former European Council President Herman Van Rompuy has denied being approached by British Prime Minister Theresa May to help end the impasse on Brexit. The Belgian Christian Democrat explained that he had dinner on Monday evening, in a private capacity, with the UK Deputy Prime Minister David Lidington, but nothing more.

According to Sky News, the encounter at the residence of the British Ambassador to Belgium took place because Ms May saw Van Rompuy as a possible mediator in the disagreement between the EU and the UK over the British withdrawal from the Union.

However, this was denied by Van Rompuy. “That has nothing to do with it,” he said.
