International trains operating across Belgium are increasingly late, according to recent figures. Last year, 8.6% of train delays were linked to problems on foreign railway networks, reported the daily publication De Tijd on Tuesday having had sight of Infrabel figures.
Most of the time, international trains have priority on the domestic network. However, for 25% of SNCB train services (Belgium’s national provider) punctuality in 2018 fell from 88.3% to 87.2% due to delays with international train services.
The Deutsche Bahn high-speed trains scored particularly badly. Only 6 out of 10 InterCity Express (ICE) trains linking Düsseldorf and Brussels arrived here on time last year.
For Eurostar, which requires trains to use the Channel Tunnel, delays occur equally regularly. That having been said, trains coming from France have shown a slight improvement in the number of arrivals on time.
