Wallonia-Brussels Federation revives anti-racism campaign

A campaign fighting racism, started in 2017, was revived on Wednesday under the banner “Racism – you’re better than that”.
The campaign is promoted around the theme of identity assignations (labels), said the department for the Minister-President of the Federation Wallonia-Brussels, Rudy Demotte, also on Wednesday.

It “intends to demonstrate the racial mechanisms aiming to reduce people to a single facet of their personality (skin colour, religion, ethnic origin or other aspect),” said the communiqué issued by Demotte's department. He is also the Minister for Equal Opportunities.

Examples to highlight include attacks against the RTBF weather presenter, Cécile Djunga, the anti-Semitic float at the Aalst carnival, the identity demonstration against the UN Global Compact for Migration and the woman wearing the veil, who was attacked in public whilst accompanied by her ten-year-old daughter, said Demotte, cited in the communiqué.

“Belgium is regularly forced to face appalling situations born of misunderstandings, fear or hatred of others,” he said.

The campaign which is organized in partnership with RTBF, will be rolled out until the end of March on television, on the radio. on the Brussels City Play screens, in Wallonia’s bus shelters and on social networks. It “paints a brief portrait of four women and four men, revealing multiple facets of their respective personalities.”
