Namur and Eupen consider creating low emissions zones
Low emission zones have already sprung up in other European cities

The cities of Namur and Eupen are interested in establishing zones of low emissions (LEZ) on their territory, according to reports. From 1 January 2020, the Walloon municipalities will be able to set up a LEZ and begin to prevent old polluting engines from driving in the area.

The Scientific Institute of Public Service (ISSeP) is currently conducting a study on the impact of such a measure.

"They serve as a pilot project," says the cabinet of Minister Carlo Di Antonio in charge of the case. Depending on the results, the two municipalities will decide, or not, in favour of such LEZ.

A LEZ is an area where access by some polluting vehicles is restricted or deterred with the aim of improving the air quality. This is in contrast to a zero-emission zone, which is an area where only zero-emission vehicles are allowed.

The Walloon Region has also announced that it is launching a site and a simulator to check whether cars can circulate in these areas.

Road traffic and become the main source of pollution: 48% are attributable to it, reports Sudpresse.
