An average 6% of classes in secondary schools were not taught in the 2017-2018 academic year due to a lack of teachers, La Libre reported on Friday. As a result, first- to sixth-year students, lost two hours of classes per week, according to the newspaper, whose report was based on a broad collection of data. The main subjects affected included Modern Languages, the Sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Physics) and technical courses such as Mechanics and Bodywork.
"There’s a real structural problem. It’s been known for a long time, but tends to become worse,” said Laurent Divers, a specialist on the issue in the office of Education Minister Marie-Martine Schyns. “It’s a fact: the profession is no longer attractive,” he added.
Education Minister Schyns plans to launch an important campaign soon to promote the teaching profession and thus tackle the problem, according to La Libre.
