Major delays predicted for Easter vacation throughout Europe

Roads look set to be congested on the Easter weekend throughout Europe, Touring announced on Monday in a press release. Code-red congestion is to be expected as people leave for the Easter vacation on 19 and 20 April and on Easter Monday, 22 April, when most will be returning home.

On the other hand, the start of the Spring break will be smoother since Belgians will be just about the only people in Europe already on vacation, with other countries going on holiday later.

Touring forecasts traffic snags (orange) for departures on Friday 5 April and Saturday 6 April in Belgium and Switzerland, then on Friday 12 and Saturday 13 April in Belgium, Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

Sundays will be ideal for travelling: 7 and 14 April are coded “green”.

Travel will be much more complicated on the Easter weekend. For departures, traffic will be very dense from late Friday morning to Saturday morning. Touring thus advises motorists to leave early Friday morning or late Friday evening and Saturday from noon onward.

Saturday 20 April is expected to be extremely difficult in Île-de-France, and for south-bound travel (red).

On the return journeys, sizeable queues are to be expected on Easter Monday in the late afternoon and evening. Monday 22 April is coded red in northwest France and Île-de-France.
