Fire risk rises to 'code red' in Antwerp nature reserves

Fire risk rises to 'code red' in Antwerp nature reserves

The dry weather has increased the risk of fire in the province of Antwerp from code orange to red, reports the Agency for Nature and Forests.

Access to the reserves of the Kalmthoutse Heide, the Merode, Eksterheide, Most-Keihevel and the Tielenheide is not recommended for safety reasons on Thursday. "We advise people against going for a walk in the nature reserves and avoid any risks," said Marie-Laure Vanwanseele, from the Agency for Nature and Forests.

Code red means the nature reserves are extremely dry and flammable. Stewards of the reserve and the fire brigade are on high alert during this time. In preperation they have deployed more equipment and manpower, ready to put out a possible fire at short notice.

Currently, code orange remains in force in Limburg. In the provinces of East and West Flanders and Flemish Brabant, code green still applies.
