A young boy (5) was injured on Sunday evening at the Easter Fair in Kortrijk after he went on an attraction unaccompanied and then ended up under a conveyor belt. This information comes from the latest update from the West Flemish Public Prosecutor's Office. The boy's condition is stable, according to local media.
The accident happened on Sunday evening around 17:30 when the boy - the son of fairground workers - was trapped on the attraction Cake-Walk, an obstacle course with moving elements.
The fire brigade had to free the boy, after which he was taken to hospital with a head injury, according to mayor Vincent Van Quickenborne. The boy was never in mortal danger, but he had to stay one night in the hospital for observation, reports add.
The attraction was closed for a while, but was allowed to open again shortly afterwards. "Of course we were shocked ourselves, but it was a regrettable accident", said the manager on Sunday evening, reports Het Nieuwsblad. "There is nothing wrong with our ride and we are pleased that we were able to open again. And also relieved that the boy is stable," he added.
The public prosecutor came to the scene and found that there is nothing wrong with the ride. There is still a need for a re-inspection, but that is routine. The little boy will presumably be questioned during the week about exactly how the accident happened.
