SNCB installs 1,700 solar panels in Ostend

SNCB has installed 1,700 solar panels at the Ostend train station, the railway utility announced on Monday. This is the National Railway Company of Belgium (SNCB)’s second largest installation of this nature, after its 6,100-panel system at its workshop in Forest.

The panels in Ostend should produce a total of 520,000 kWh per year, equivalent to the annual energy consumption of 150 families.

For this project, the SNCB went into a public-private partnership with PerPetum Energy, a Ghent-based company, which is responsible for running and maintaining the solar panels for the next 10 years.

“The SNCB is using green energy in interesting conditions and will become the owner of the installation after this 10-year period,” the public utility stated in a press release.

The energy produced by the panels will be used mainly to heat and light up the train station, while the remainder will be shared between the parking lot building and a workshop.

The SNCB does not intend to stop there. It plans to increase its investment in renewable energy.

By the year 2022, it aims to cut energy consumption by 7% in its stations, offices and workshops, and by 5% on its trains, compared to 2016.
