Swedish furniture giant IKEA has launched a "repair" campaign for its Sundvik chest of drawers after concerns over safety.
This move was prompted following three incidents in which a child fell from the cupboard, which can also be used as a changing table for children. During the events in question, a collapsible part of the cupboard, which forms the changing table, came loose.
According to Ikea, this happened because the users did not use the "safety fitting" - the safety lock - supplied with the unit to secure the unit. Frequent misuse of the part may result in the part becoming detached, it adds.
“Safe products are always a priority for IKEA. We deeply regret that incidents have occurred. We are relieved that, as far as we know, the children are doing well. IKEA has now taken precautions and will further improve communication around the product, " said Emelie Knoester, Business Area Manager at IKEA Kinderland.
Customers with a Sundvik cabinet who have lost their safety hardware can pick up a new one free of charge, and do not have to provide a receipt.
"The product is safe when used as intended and according to the instructions provided," IKEA added in a statement.
