Speed checks could be outsourced to the private sector, says police commissioner

The detection of speed limit violations could be outsourced to the private sector in order to alleviate the personnel shortage in the federal police, following a proposal from Commissioner General of the Belgian federal police Marc De Mesmaeker. By outsourcing the work,  teams would thus be free to carry out other tasks, he said on Wednesday in Het Laatste Nieuws.

"Speed limit violations could be recorded very well by private companies," De Mesmaeker considered. While the personnel freed up could spend time on more useful tasks, he added.

"The time when the police had a monopoly on security is behind us. The more partners we have in making society safe the better."

This measure is one on a list of ideas submitted by De Mesmaeker to the next federal government with an eye to the May 26 elections.
