Flemish Minister for Animal Welfare Ben Weyts (N-VA) wants to introduce a label for animal-friendly meat. The label already exists in the Netherlands, but Weyts wants to bring it to Flanders as well. Since cooperation with the Netherlands is not feasible, according to Weyts, the system will be worked out by ex-president of the Catholic Belgian Farmers Union, Piet Vanthemsche, reported to Het Nieuwsblad.
The intention is that both department stores and butchers will use the system. Vanthemsche will have to find a way to check whether producers are following the rules and respecting animal welfare.
The label will be clearly indicated in stores, according to Weyts. However, the meat will be a lot more expensive, he added.
After the elections of Sunday 26 May, Weyts' successor as Minister for Animal Welfare will have to see it through.
