Thousand-euro grant for Walloon cycling network

The Wallonia region has granted a subsidy of over €300,000 to local authorities to further the development of an extensive cycling network in the province of Namur.

The €352,548.80 subsidy will help finance the development of several cycling routes which will be mapped out and signalled in order to allow riders to easily navigate through thousands of kilometres in the area.

The network will further develop cross-country roads as well as extend the regional slow mobility paths —Wallonia’s Ravel network, on which only non-motorized vehicle can travel— covering a total distance of 1,250 km in the outskirts of the cities of Dinant and Namur.

The regional subsidy will inject a new flow of cash into the deployment of the cycling network, on which construction started in 2015, as part of a wider cycling plan promoted by local and regional tourism authorities in the provinces of Luxembourg and Namur.

The cycling paths are expected to bolster tourism in the province of Namur, and similar projects are under study in neighbouring towns.

Provincial authorities will finance the remaining €88,137 not covered by the subsidy, and it is expected that the network will be open to tourists and residents alike from the spring of 2021.
