Man waves tomahawk in newspaper shop, gets three months in jail

A 27-year-old man from Ostend has been sentenced to three months' imprisonment by the Bruges court after being found guilty of the illegal possession of a weapon. On 4 January 2018 Jimmy V. was waving a tomahawk (single-handed axe) near a supermarket in Ostend. Bystanders informed the police, but by the time they arrived, V. had already disappeared, according to reports.

The man next appeared at a newsagent's shop, where he again brought out his tomahawk. The police rushed to the scene and arrested the man after he refused to give up his axe.

"I have native American blood in my veins, and I am a distant relative of Geronimo (legendary leader of the Apache tribe)," he shouted, according to reports.

By the time he reached the police station, V. could no longer remember the incident, leading the assumption to be made that he was under the influence of alcohol or drugs, according to reports.
