Ostend Police has launched an investigation after a vigilant hiker and her dog found several suspicious sausages on Wednesday morning.

The sausages - which had an unknown black substance pushed into them - were scattered in the grass on the corner of Mariakerkelaan and Kersenlaan in the Belgian coastal city, according to a Facebook post.

"ATTENTION!!!!!! Just found this zwanworstjes along the footpath of the monastery of Mariakerke Avenue. Layers visible in the grass in the kersenslaan. I think the black scoops are poison," said the post.

"An investigation has been started and an official report was drawn up. Our services are checking whether such sausages can still be found in the area", says Kris Allary, Commissioner of the Ostend Local Police. The finder filed a report, the Commissioner confirms.

For the time being, no mention has been made of pets falling ill in the area, reports HLN
