Four Belgian universities feature in the top 200 of the 2020 QS World University Rankings, a global university ranking report which has been published annually since 2004.

The report, released on Tuesday, positions the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (KU Leuven) at 80th place, the highest ranked Belgian university on the list, and the only one in the top 100.

The University of Ghent (UGent), the Université Catholique de Louvain (UCL) and the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) are still in the top 200, respectively standing at 130th, 167th and 195th place.

The ranking accounts for 1,620 institutions and is formed by over 94,000 academics worldwide. These judges evaluate the institutions’ academic reputation, employment reputation, number of scientific citations, international attractiveness and the ratio of student numbers per faculty members.

“I am proud that the work of our researchers and our strong academic reputation are known far beyond national borders”, said Luc Sels, the rector at KU Leuven, in a statement on their website this Wednesday. The university has also moved up one position from their ranking last year.

Institutions from the United States and the United Kingdom occupied all of the top ten rankings, with the exception of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, which came sixth.
