The City of Antwerp has decided to issue a temporary ban on tourist carriages because of the heat, the alderman in charge of animal well-being, Fons Duchateau announced on Monday.
The service will be suspended throughout the week, starting today, Duchateau said.
He said he had received many emails from Antwerp residents worried about the fate of the horses drawing the carriages in the hot summer sun.
The municipal authorities in Ostend had already decided on Sunday to suspend the carriages from Monday until further notice. A municipal ordinance bans the carriages from being drawn in the streets once the temperature reaches 28°C.
On the other hand, carriages continue to run in Brugge (Bruges).
