A Belgian man and a Dutch national were killed after their glider plane crashed into the French Alps on Tuesday, local authorities confirmed to local media on Wednesday.

The glider plane was reportedly being piloted by the 64-year-old Belgian when it plunged into a wooded area from a height of 1,200 metres in circumstances which remain unclear, according to La Libre.

Authorities were alerted at around 21:00 after both men reportedly took off from the aerodrome of Sisteron-Vaumeilh, in the south of France.

Both the Belgian man and the Dutchman, 67, whose identities have not been made public, were said to be on vacation in the region.

Local authorities are now investigating the accident with the assistance of the Marseille-Provence aviation police, a scientific police team and a local gendarmerie unit.
