A mobile female urinal has been set up in Ghent as the city prepares for its annual music and arts Gentse Feesten, which is set to kick off on Friday.
Created by the Ghent-based MissWizz, the urinal is one of several versions tried and tested by Antwerp University graduate Ellen Lejeune.
Lejeune's urinal aims to offer an alternative to the common-sight of long bathroom queues outside women's restrooms at public events.
The urinal was designed to be mobile as it is foldable and does not need to be connected to the public sewer system.
Made up of a single cabin with two urinals —one higher than the other, to accommodate different heights— it allows users to urinate in a semi-squatted position.
The urinal was installed in Ghent's Bibliotheekstraat on Thursday, and Lejeune was one of the first to try it.
"It works perfectly," she told VRT news. "Now every woman at Gentse Feesten can use the toilet at their heart's content!"
In another attempt to make urinating at festivals and other public events more accessible to all attendants, a French and Danish duo created an industrial and "scalable" spiral-shaped female urinal for users which has made several appearances at outdoor events.
