A Liège police officer who was shot in the head during a shootout is no longer in a critical condition but remains in a coma, Liège police said.

Information about the officer's prognosis was given to the Liège police by the family of the victim, identified as 33-year-old Maxime Pans.

"Although he is in stable condition, the doctors say there are many uncertainties regarding his recovery, and that his immune system has been greatly compromised," the policeman’s family said.

Pans was hospitalised after he was shot in the head during a routine police check in Rue de Visé, north of downtown Liège, in a shootout in which Pans' partner shot the assailant dead.

Pans, who has been in the hospital for four weeks, underwent two operations during the week of the shootout.
