A man found floating in a canal in Bruges early on Monday was pulled out of the water lifeless with a second man rescued and rushed to the hospital in a critical condition.

The deceased man is one of two crew members who went missing from the ship Vivaldi in the Boudewijnkanaal, which connects the city of Bruges to the port of Zeebrugge.

A skipper on the ship noticed two crew members were missing at around 6:30 AM on Monday as the vessel was preparing to moor, according to Het Nieuwsblad. The skipper found one of the crew members floating in the water between the ship and the wharf.

Emergency response teams arrive at the scene and retrieved one man from the water, whom they resuscitated on the scene before a team rushed him to the hospital in a critical condition.

Upon the arrival of the emergency services, one man was still missing, with divers and a sonar boat deployed to find and retrieve him from the water.

First respondents eventually found the missing man, who was pulled lifeless from the water.

The identities of both men are so far unconfirmed, but Flemish media reports say that the man taken to the hospital is a 63-year-old Dutchman and that the man pulled dead from the water is a Belgian.
