Belgian Youth for Climate (YFC) representatives Adélaïde Charlier, Anuna De Wever and older sister Josefien Hoerée, announced on Monday morning that they will not travel to Madrid for the COP25. They are currently in the Amazon forest in Brazil.

The UN climate meeting, COP 25, will be held in the Spanish capital in early December after the cancellation of the original meeting by Chile because of intense social tensions in the country.

"Anuna, Josefien and I will not be at the COP25" Charlier said in a statement on the Monday morning news.

"We could only make it if we fly, but this is not an option for us (...) A delegation from YFC-Belgium will be at the COP. They will denounce the responsibility of our politicians and their lack of ambition," Charlier added.

The activists intend to continue to navigate with other climate activists to Martinique where they will collectively "organise a videoconference during the entire two-week duration of the COP."

"This means that YFC is represented on site, as well as numerically. We will be able to support and coordinate the delegation online without having to take the plane," the Belgians said, admitting that it was "a difficult decision."

Nevertheless, they highlight the fact that the COP being held in Madrid is ultimately "good news for our climate ministers. They can now easily travel by train, and will thus contribute to the solution, rather than to the problem."
