Flanders ends grant for electric cars

Flanders will no longer offer subsidies to those buying electric cars from January 2020, the government announced.

"The grants have missed their target," according to Minister of Energy, Zuhal Demir.

Those who buy an electric car before 31 December will still be able to claim an allowance of up to 4,000 euros.

However, figures show Flemish drivers haven’t bought too many electric cars. Statistics from 2018, show that out of the 3,600 electric cars purchased that year, only 400 grant requests were registered.

The measure therefore did not meet expectations, the government explains. Flanders was the only region in the country to offer this incentive allowance.
