The climate movement Extinction Rebellion has announced it will demonstrate at the Autosalon Brussels Motor Show on 18 January 2020.
The group wants to “correct the deceptive image that the car industry paints of itself” with their act of civil disobedience, which they call ‘Lies Salon’.
“In 2016, the Dieselgate (the scandal about the manipulation of emission tests by car manufacturer Volkswagen) demonstrated the recklessness and unreliability of the automobile sector. Now, faced with the undeniable reality of global warming, car manufacturers are trying to present themselves as pioneers of sustainable mobility,” said Extinction Rebellion in a press release.
By disrupting the Brussels Motor Show, Extinction Rebellion wants to denounce the motto, ‘Soft mobility’, of this edition. The movement calls it a “new lie” of the automotive industry to mislead their customers and maintain their business model.
“Despite all the new ‘electric’, ‘hybrid’ or other so-called ‘green’ and ‘zero-emission’ inventions from car manufacturers, it will remain a major cause of the climate and environmental crisis,” the release stated.
“The technological and industrial development must be at the service of the well-being of all people and the planet instead of commercial profit,” the movement said.
Extinction Rebellion has called on citizens to also participate in their demonstration.
