Firefighters in Antwerp pulled a male body from the water early on Friday, after it was discovered floating by a bridge near the port.

Two passers-by reported the incident to authorities after they saw the body floating in the water at around 5:30 AM by the Londenbrug, a bridge in the Antwerp Port area.

Police said the body belonged to a 31-year-old man whose identity was unknown, and that an investigation had been launched to determine how it ended up in the water.

Initial reports by police said that the man had probably not been in the water for long, according to Het Nieuwsblad.

An autopsy will be performed on the body, which was taken to a university hospital after it was recovered from the water.
