Criminal investigation after student suicide before hazing in Ghent

A criminal investigation was opened after the death of a first-year student from Ghent University. The young woman allegedly committed suicide before a hazing ritual organised by student association VRG, confirmed the Ghent department of the West Flanders prosecutor’s office. The association cancelled all subsequent hazing activities. Ghent University is awaiting the results of the investigation to decide if there is a link between the student’s death and the planned hazing ritual.

“The young woman was not due to take part in the hazing activity which is restricted to law students, but she mentioned VRG in her suicide letter. The contents of the letter was not made public,” revealed the daily Het Laatste Nieuws on Friday morning.

The woman died on Tuesday evening. “We can confirm that a student died at the beginning of the week in Ghent. It looks like suicide. We can say no more while the investigation is on-going,” adds the prosecutor’s office.
