Critical shortage of French-speaking nursery, primary teachers

The shortage of teachers in nursery and primary schools in French-speaking Belgium has reached an all-time high and was the focus of an emergency meeting on Thursday of the Education Shortages Chamber,  newspapers, L’Avenir newspapers reported on Friday. “For the first time, it was decided to declare  a shortage of teachers in primary and nursery education,” said Dominique Luperto, legal and institutional adviser to the Education Council of Communes and Provinces. “Replacement problems appeared very early in the year, which shows that the problem is definitely not temporary,” she added.

Citicap - the Inter-regional Commission on Capacity Titles – will relay the Chamber’s decision to Wallonia’s Government, which will need to issue a decree validating it, the newspapers reported.

This official recognition of the shortage will mean that people deciding to study for the teaching profession will be exempted from certain obligations, the dailies explained.
