Flanders needs more teachers. There are currently 1,500 teaching jobs available – 453 in primary schools and 971 in secondary schools. That’s twice as many as this time last year, according to figures VTM Nieuws released on Saturday.
This is not a new problem and it is expected to get worse over the next few years. It is estimated that by 2024 Flanders will need to find 5,000 to 7,000 extra teachers.
To deal with this problem, the Flemish Education minister Hilde Crevits plans to launch a campaign that will highlight the good points of the profession later this year to try and encourage people to apply.
