The construction sector has 100,000 foreign workers

In 2007, 23,962 foreign workers were involved in the construction sector, compared to 101,172 who came to work in Belgium in 2014. This is according to figures from the ONSS, which were relayed by Le Soir on Monday. The sector only has 200,000 employees altogether. These figures don’t take freelancers into account. There was a particularly big rise in unattached workers in 2013 and 2014. Over the last two years, the yearly increase has gone up to 25,000 people.

The Netherlands sends out the most unattached workers, with more than 62,586 labourers working in Belgium. Poland is in second place, with 43,418. Germany, France and Luxembourg complete the top ten with the Eastern countries (Romaina, Hungary) and Portugal.

In 2007, there were 1,042 bankruptcies in the construction sector. In 2013, this went up to 2,030.
