Horticulture: 15,000 Polish seasonal workers in Belgium

The horticultural sector employs 45,000 workers in Belgium, 3,500 of them in Wallonia. The sector has trouble finding seasonal workers in Belgium, and the majority of workers are foreign. There are 15,000 Poles, 5,000 Romanians and 2,500 Bulgarians working on a seasonal basis in Belgium, the Sudpresse papers said on Thursday. Claude Vanhemelen, from the Walloon Horticultural Federation, says Belgians don’t choose this sector as “the very nature of the work doesn’t offer any long term perspectives. The work is also very hard and not very well paid”. A seasonal worker’s salary varies from 8.50 to 9.50 euros an hour.
