Closure of Caterpillar's Gosselies plant – more than 5,000 to lose their jobs

The Strategic Development Committee of Charleroi Sud-Hainaut Region held an emergency meeting on Friday following the announcement of the closure of the Caterpillar plant in Gosselies. The Committee said it should be borne in mind that, in addition to the 2,200 jobs lost at Caterpillar Gosselies, the collateral damage to the company’s many sub-contractors could increase total loss of jobs to more than 5,000.

The Strategic Development Committee is made up of the region’s political, trade union and business leaders. According to its president, Dominique Demonte, the decision aroused a unanimous feeling of sadness and incomprehension among the committee’s members, who were equally unanimous in calling for a mobilization of leaders at all levels.
