The Brussels public transport company, Stib, is offering an allowance of 500 euros to any employee who helps it to recruit a candidate whose profile can enable it to increase the number of women in sections with few female staffers, Sudpresse reported on Monday. The measure went into effect on the 1st of June. It aims to respond to “two big challenges” the Stib explained in an internal email message. “The first is to face the increasing need for workers in the technical professions (technicians, bachelors/masters in technical fields),” it said. “The second is to enrich our organisation by recruiting more women.”
According to the Stib’s spokeswoman, quoted by La Capital, the measure is among a raft of initiatives aimed at increasing the number of women in the public transport company to 12.5% by 2021.
However, the Brussels State Secretary for Equality Opportunities, Bianca Debaets, feels that the allowance is perhaps not the most adequate solution. “There are other underrepresented groups,” she commented. “This has to be seen within a more global context at the level of human resources.”
