Belgium wants to invest 10 million euros in a DNA database

Belgium is thinking of investing 10 million euros in a technological platform that would register the DNA of tens of millions of Belgians, L’Echo reported on Saturday. A consortium made up of research institutes, hospitals, and businesses are expected to sign a collaboration agreement.

This platform would improve diagnosis for patients and help detect hereditary diseases. The project’s promotors want this to be the first step towards a genetic passport which would serve as the basis for healthcare throughout a patient’s life.

“DNA analysis should be the go-to for hospitals in the 21st century”, says Joris Vermeerch, the director of Louvain University Clinic’s Human Genetics Centre.
