4 in 10 doctors are women

4 in 10 doctors in Belgium are women. It has just hit the 40% mark, according to figures from the Public Health SPF, which La Libre Belgique looked at.

On the 31st December 2016, Belgium had 43,662 qualified doctors, 17,474 of whom were women (40.25%). The proportion of women doctors is higher for specialists (40.8%) then for GPs (39.2%).

Globally, 56.1% of GPs are in Flanders, compared to 55.4% in 2014. During the same time period, the proportion of Walloon doctors has gone from 34.4% to 34%. The proportion of Brussels doctors has dropped from 10.2% to 9.9%. Specialists follow a similar trend. GPs are getting older, as 56.6% of them are over 55 years old.
