CSC slams poor communication by Afsca director

The crisis of eggs contaminated with the insecticide Fipronil has exposed the bureaucratic nature of the Afsca, Belgium’s Federal Agency for the Safety of the Food Chain, says the Confederation of Christian Trade Unions, CSC, which has also slammed the lack of internal and external communication by Afsca Director Herman Diricks.

In a communique issued on Monday, the CSC’s public services department lashed out at the slow procedures at the agency, saying that the service in charge of the matter was already aware of the presence of an insecticide in eggs in June and took measures, but did not communicate on them.

This crisis “has been known for two months now and strict procedures will still have to be followed for certain laboratories to conduct the tests required in the event of fipronil contamination,” the union said. “In recent years, CSC Public Services has already deplored this bureaucracy, which is the tree that hides the forest,” it added.
