Eggs contaminated by insecticide – the dangers of Fipronil were highlighted by the Health Council back in 2016

Afsca has not brought in tests for the chemical Fipronil, even though the agency was alerted to the fact it was toxic a year ago. Le Soir and the Sudpresse papers reported on this story on Saturday.

During a meeting on Wednesday, Afsca explained that tests on eggs do not systematically check for Fipronil. This is despite the fact that the Health Council published a report on the dangers of Fipronil back in June 2016. This report was sent to the Public Health and Environment Ministers, as well as their administrations and agencies like Afsca, according to Le Soir.

“We suspect Fipronil disrupts the endocrine system. The gestation and infancy stages appear to be critical stages in case of exposure”, according to Health Council scientists.

They recommend that public authorities take a “preventative approach” to the risk. “We would like to point out that classic toxicology classifications do not fit this type of product, or pesticides in general. This is due to the cocktail of effects and the effects on embryos, which are not well known at this stage” Marie-Louise Scippo told Le Soir. She requested the report and is a member of Afsca’s Science Committee.

The agency has not brought in systematic tests for the chemical more than a year after the report. Fiprinol is at the heart of a scandal involving contaminated eggs.
